Rain, fog pushes NASCAR Cup Series at Texas to Monday

By Brandon Reed Reporter

Persistent precipitation has pushed the resumption of Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series race at Texas Motor Speedway to Monday morning.

The race started under a light mist, and ran the first 42 laps as the mist became heavier and a fog settled in.  That led officials first to throw the caution flag, followed 10 laps later by a red flag for the deteriorating conditions.

The halt came after a couple of Playoff contenders had issues.  Kevin Harvick was leading when his car got into the backstretch wall on lap 30.  That brought him to pit road under green for repairs.

Behind him on the same lap, Denny Hamlin’s car slid high in turn 2, but he was able to stay out of the wall and continue.  Just a few laps later, the race was brought to a halt due to the weather.

NASCAR and track officials worked hard to try to keep the track close to race condition.  Just before 9 pm, race officials made the call to postpone the event.

The race is now slated to try to resume at 10 am Monday morning.

Getting the race officially in may be a tall task for NASCAR officials this week.  Weather forecasts for the Fort Worth area call for a 90 percent chance of rain on Monday with a high of 52, an 80 percent chance of rain on Tuesday with a high of 47, and an 80 percent chance of rain on Wednesday with a high of 42.

Once the race restarts, Clint Bowyer will be the leader, with Jimmie Johnson second, Erik Jones third, Joey Logano fourth and Martin Truex, Jr. in fifth.

Chase Elliott, Ryan Blaney, Austin Dillon, Brad Keselowski and Kyle Busch rounded out the top 10 at the time of the red flag.

WDUN will carry live PRN Radio coverage of the completion of the race beginning at 10 am Monday on 102.9 FM and streaming online on AccessWDUN.
