Kevin Harvick passed Denny Hamlin for the lead with 70 laps to go and held to win at Bristol Motor Speedway on Sunday, ending a two-day, water-logged ordeal.
Harvick led 128 laps for his second NASCAR Sprint Cup victory of the season and his second at the high-banked, half-mile concrete bullring. Fittingly for a race halted because of Saturday night storms, Harvick had to sit out one last rain delay before easily pulling away on the restart and cruising to victory.
“Thank you, thank you, thank you,” Harvick said over the radio as he crossed the line.
Harvick enticed his car owner — and retiring driver — Tony Stewart to do burnouts with him to celebrate the three-time champion’s last race at Bristol.
Ricky Stenhouse Jr. was second, followed by Denny Hamlin, Austin Dillon and Chris Buescher.
Kyle Busch led 256 laps, but was knocked out in a crash.
Busch clearly had the strongest car, leading a race-high 256 laps. But he spun on Lap 373 when a part broke and Justin Allgaier, driving in relief of Michael Arnett, hit the No. 18 car flush to end the defending series champ’s race.
It was the second time in three races that rain impacted a Sprint Cup race and only a fraction of the 160,000 in the stands Saturday night returned for the conclusion.
Women’s soccer
Jenna Roering’s goal in the 107th minute lifted No. 21 Santa Clara past No. 18 Cal. It was the second extra-time win over a ranked team in three days for the Broncos (2-0), who beat No. 11 USC 3-2 on Friday.
Golf
Si Woo Kim closed with a 3-under 67 for a five-stroke victory at the PGA Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, North Carolina. He had a 21-under 259 total at Sedgefield, tying the event 72-hole record set eight years ago by Carl Pettersson.
Kim set a tournament record with a 60 in the second round. Kim became the youngest winner on tour this season.
The 56-year-old Inkster made a 10-foot birdie putt on the par-5 18th in regulation to force the playoff. Last year, the Hall of Famer from San Jose State won the event, beating Johnson by two strokes.
MLS
Clint Dempsey scored twice and Cristian Roldan added a goal — all in the second half — in the Seattle Sounders’ 3-1 victory over the Portland Timbers to tighten the playoff chase in the Western Conference. The Sounders (9-12-3) won their third straight game and climbed within two points of the Timbers (8-10-8) for the last playoff spot in the Western Conference.
Tennis
Angelique Kerber, the world’s second-ranked player, wasted a chance to end idle Serena Williams’ 183-week run at the top falling to Karolina Pliskova 6-3, 6-1 in the championship match at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati.
On the men’s side, Andy Murray also ran out of steam in the title match. He fell to Marin Cilic 6-4, 7-5, ending his career-best winning streak at 22 matches.
San Jose Giants
A San Jose offense that had smacked 20 homers in its previous nine games was held to four hits in an 8-1 loss to Rancho Cucamonga at Municipal Stadium.
