Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus has reiterated his hope that over a million Rohingya, who are taking refuge in Bangladesh after being forcibly displaced from Myanmar, will be able to celebrate the next Eid back in their homeland.
In an Eid message posted on the chief adviser's official Facebook page on Sunday, Yunus expressed his hope that the "1.2 million guests" would soon be able to return home safely.
The message was accompanied by a video highlighting the plight of the displaced community, bdnews24.com reports.
"Eid Mubarak to all. As we celebrate Eid safely and joyously, let us remember the more than 1.2 million guests who remain in distress in our country. I pray they will be able to celebrate their next Eid in their own homeland."
The sentiment echoed what the chief adviser had said earlier on March 14, when he joined thousands of Rohingya for iftar at a refugee settlement in Ukhiya.
Standing alongside UN Secretary-General António Guterres, Yunus stressed the urgent need to repatriate the Rohingya to their homeland.
Speaking in Chattogram's regional dialect to better connect with the beleaguered community, he said: "We pray to Allah that next Eid, you can return to your homes and celebrate there."
He also assured the refugees that he would personally urge the UN chief to take concrete steps toward expediting their safe and dignified return.
